Rescue: load transfer and tandem descent with ZIGZAG
The ZIGZAG can be used together with a textile Prusik to rescue an arborist in trouble. Controlled Prusik slippage allows the victim to be released from their system using the rescuer’s weight as a counterbalance. The ZIGZAG used with the CHICANE in a DdRT (MRS) setup enables a controlled two-person descent.

1. ZIGZAG setup for rescue
The rescuer prepares the ZIGZAG with a textile Prusik to be able to quickly release and lower the victim.
Note:
With this technique, a Prusik failure presents no danger for the user or the victim.
2. Attaching to the victim and removing slack
Once at the victim’s level, the rescuer installs the CHICANE on their ZIGZAG to be ready to carry out a two-person descent.
They then attach the end of their rope to the victim’s harness.

3. Load transfer and releasing the victim’s rope
By sliding the Prusik on their rope, the rescuer uses their own body weight to raise the victim, allowing the rope to be unloaded and the victim to be released from their system.
4. Descending
The rescuer can now carry out the descent with the victim loaded on their ZIGZAG. The rescuer’s ZIGZAG operates in double mode; the CHICANE is installed to provide the extra friction necessary for a tandem descent.
