The Appalachian Trail: A Storied Route

With 2,190 miles (3,500 km) of trail, the AT is one of the longest footpaths in the world. Located in the eastern United States, it runs from Georgia to Maine, passing through twelve other states along the way. It’s one of the most renowned trails in the world of thru-hiking. Vast and varied landscapes offer endless opportunities for exploration and good times for anyone who steps up to the challenge. Often hiked in sections, the Appalachian Trail offers infinite possibilities for backpackers who enjoy long-distance days or adventurous hikers who aren’t afraid to take on steep, committing climbs.

Immersed in Nature…And the Elements

When you embark on the AT, there’s no doubt that good times are in store with your hiking partner or crew of friends. But you can also be sure that surprises and unexpected situations await along the way. In this adventure, heavy downpours transform a peaceful trail into slippery terrain, demanding careful attention with every step. At nightfall, everyone is happy to nestle into their tents, sometimes inside a backcountry shelter. They’re content to warm up by the fire, recall anecdotes from the day, and dry their clothes before hitting the trail again tomorrow. The next morning, it’s likely they’ll start the day navigating thick fog with low visibility, until at last, the sun will peek over the horizon in an unforgettable display of light.

Lighting — The Absolute Necessity

Of course, spending multiple days on the AT also means spending time in the dark. Carrying a headlamp is non-negotiable, as well as spare batteries and/or something to recharge your battery. Lighting is vital for this kind of adventure. It allows you to see as you cook your evening meal over the stove or heat up a warm drink after crawling out of your sleeping bag at dawn. A headlamp will allow you to explore the forest around camp and maybe even illuminate a few critters that hide out during the day. And before the sun even rises, it’ll allow you to set off towards the next distant summit.
