Recall of Petzl LASER SPEED 10 cm ice screws (Europe only)

Recall of Petzl LASER SPEED 10 cm ice screws (G051AA03) due to regulatory noncompliance with the EN 568: 2015 standard.

October 2 2024

Current

The EN 568: 2015 standard does not currently allow the certification of short ice screws, such as the Petzl LASER SPEED 10 cm ice screw. This ice screw model does not meet one of the standard's test requirements (axial test carried out in aerated concrete: 8 kN pull-out strength in aerated concrete, instead of the required 10 kN).

For this reason, the Petzl LASER SPEED 10 cm ice screw cannot meet regulation (EU) 2016/425 on personal protective equipment and thus cannot bear the CE mark. In fact, it is currently marketed as a non-PPE progression screw.

In this context, Petzl is obliged by European authorities to recall the Petzl LASER SPEED 10 cm ice screw due to this regulatory noncompliance. Please return this product to us by contacting your local Petzl After-sales Service via the contact form for processing.

Petzl remains convinced that short ice screws used for progression are essential to ice-climber safety when the ice is thin. That's why we're working with the CEN/TC 136 standards committee and the WG5 working group to revise the EN 568 standard to enable the certification of short screws, especially our Petzl LASER SPEED 10 cm ice screw.
